How many cars can you think of which have sold more than 45,000,000 units worldwide since inception? Still thinking….? I’m sure that the answer is none at all, that is of course if you are not thinking about the ever popular Toyota Corolla with its legendary reliability, practicality and affordability.
I was invited to drive the 2017 11th-generation Toyota Corolla sedan and find out what changes and innovations it has to offer. To start things off, it is immediately evident that Toyota has been focusing on quality with this latest generation, with an overall build and ride quality that is now more solid than ever before.
From overall soft-touch premium feel materials throughout the cabin, to the more angular and modern dashboard, the latest generation Corolla appears to borrow some styling and design elements from its high-end Lexus family members.
This latest generation has more of a facelifted design rather than a complete re-design, it does, add much sharper and pointer lines, which make it look more sporty and imposing on the road. You will also notice the subtle yet impressive design tweaks on the rear of the vehicle.
Standard equipment and safety systems have been improved from past generations with rear fog lamps and rear seatbelt lamp and buzzer as standard on all models. 1.6L & 1.8L models also enjoy vehicle stability control; hill-start assist control and emergency brake signal.
The exclusive trim model offers auto headlight levelling and a speedometer with a TFT colour display as well as LED headlamps and daytime running lamps.
Over the course of the day, I drove the very punchy 1.8-Litre petrol model which proved to offer good power over a flat level torque band, and the 1.4-Litre D4D model which offers a 1.4-Litre diesel powerplant and delivers great bottom end power thanks to increased torque.
The Toyota Corolla has always been a very solid and reliable performer, as a result, Toyota has sold more Corolla’s than any other vehicle within this segment spanning over its 50-year life. This latest generation retains the essence of Corolla while adding a further shot of luxury, safety and technology making it better than ever.
