The roadster, it’s a body format which remains one of my favourites in the automotive space. The culmination of a short, cosseting cabin combined with swooping-lines, a long bonnet and in the case of the Z4 M40i smoking hot performance.

The Perfect Blend
You know what it’s like when you find that perfect wine. Served in the correct type of bottle, well-aged and poured at the correct temperature, that is what its like discovering the new Z4 M40i.
Powered by BMW’s highly revered B58 motor (aka, the one which powers the mighty BMW M2 and more recently even Toyota’s new Supra), longitudinally-mounted and mated to an 8-speed rapid shifting automated transmission all wrapped up in a compact focused package is what it is all about!
Intoxicating Sound Matched By Performance
The B58 motor has made its mark as one of the all-time modern automotive engine yardsticks. With 250 kW and 500 Nm of torque and no shortage of the right pops and bangs, placed in a model like the new Z4 it is an absolute hoot to drive.
The 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbo-petrol motor is an absolute peach of an engine, with all power sent through the 8-speed automatic transmission and the joys listening to the sounds of induction with the top down.
This latest-generation BMW Z4 is a much sharper, more angular and grown-up version of its predecessors. While the likes of the Z3 of some around 20-years ago had an ice-cool look at me James Bond type style, it was in many ways a bit of a softy.
As the model became known as the Z4, it grew a larger presence and sharper image made most evident by this latest model, which I think looks absolutely fantastic. Every line, angle and crease comprise of form following function, a theme continued into the interior cabin space.
With a fully digital dashboard and the likes of the BMW Connected Drive Services 7.0, the new top-down Beemer is bang-up-to-date. An oversized heads-up-display (HUD) now features, as well as BMW’s voice assistant feature, concierge services on demand and even the likes wireless charging and USB-C ports. The new Z4 is as much about a sharp interior as it is about its svelte styling.
Conclusion & SA Pricing
Packing the perfect marriage of dynamic handling, spot-on weight distribution, a stonking good engine, technology and finally style, I believe that BMW has really pulled off some magic with this all-new 3rd generation Z4. There are some vehicles which make you love what you do, and this is one of them for me. In keeping with the brand’s slogan, it delivers Sheer Driving Pleasure.
The BMW Z4 M40i is priced from R1 030 500 and includes BMW’s standard 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.
