The Ford GT race car will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans – referred to by many as the Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency – starting next year. Revealed today at the famous circuit in Le Mans, France, Ford GT will compete in the Le Mans GT Endurance class for professional teams and drivers (LM GTE Pro).

New Toyota Auris


The new Auris gets a comprehensive ‘top ‘n tail’ to give it an arresting look up front as well as a pert new rear end. These changes give the Auris a more hunkered down, masculine demeanor. A point of interest is that the Auris is one of the lowest cars in its class. This translates to a low-slung driving position, which makes the driver feel closer and more connected to the road.

Zooming in on the front design, a pair of chrome ‘wings’ emerges from a new, more prominent Toyota emblem set in a thinner upper grille. These ‘wings’ underscore the front lip of the bonnet, running the full width of the car and encapsulating the crisply angled inside edge of the sharp-eyed headlamp clusters.

The lower grille, set beneath a more prominent front bumper, now runs the full width of the car. It has a narrow centre section, framed by a chrome accent strip which widens into deep pods housing integrated fog lights (from Xs model upwards), at the furthest edges of the new design.

In profile the new front and rear styling generate longer overhangs, improving the overall balance of the design and leading the eye in a sweeping line from the front Toyota emblem to the rear lamp cluster. A new shark fin roof antenna and turbine-inspired 16-inch alloy wheel designs add further impact.


To the rear, the lower half of the car has been completely redesigned, again to add visual emphasis to the vehicle’s broad stance. The width of the deeper, more muscular bumper design is amplified by the location of reflector housings at the furthest edges and by a thin chrome trim line. The rear lamp clusters have also been redesigned, giving Auris its own, distinctive lighting signature.

From Xs model grades upwards, the exterior grille and bumper finishes get an extra flourish courtesy of glossy piano black finishes and chrome trim.

Two new exterior colours have been added – Citrus Metallic (a chartreuse hue) and Blue Metallic (royal blue in intensity).


Extra Sensory Delights

On board, the sensory quality of the cabin has been significantly raised with a redesigned more curvaceous dashboard boasting soft-touch quality trims and surface finishes as well as a new central, tablet-inspired audio visual display panel which comes standard on all models from the Xs grade upwards. Featuring electrostatic (touch-sensitive) switchgear – a first in terms of technology advancement for Toyota – the touch screen panel offers CD/DVD, Radio (FM/AM) and Bluetooth/AUX/USB functionality as well as a host of other on-board functions including a reverse camera with guide lines.

The driver’s instrument binnacle has a stronger, more sporting design with tubed tachometer and speedometer dials either side of a new 4.2-inch colour TFT multi-information screen (Xr models only).

In addition, many details, such as the air vents, door handles and gear lever surround, have been reworked to give a crisper, high-quality appearance. The shape and finish of chrome trim features have been harmonised and a new set of upholstery designs, including leather for the Xr, complete the more premium quality cabin environment.


Under-the-skin Refinements

The new Auris range benefits from further suspension and steering revisions designed to improve ride comfort and handling. Components in the MacPherson strut front suspension have been revised, including the design of the coil springs, shock absorbers, upper insulators, bound stoppers and stabiliser bushes. In combination, the changes to the suspension improve initial roll damping, minimise friction and amplify straight-line ride comfort.

In addition, the electric power steering system’s mapping has been tuned to further build steering weight as vehicle speed rises, giving better feedback between 60 and 80km/h.

Soundproofing has been improved by adding additional sound-absorbing materials in strategic locations around the instrument panel and transmission tunnel. An outer tunnel silencer has been added to minimise transmission noise.

Additional sealing in the front wing, dashboard and door area further cuts the amount of engine, road and wind noise reaching the cabin.

Making the Grade


As before, Auris is available with three powertrains:

  • 3-litre petrol unit producing 73kW at 6000rpm and 128Nm of torque at 3800rpm and propelling the Auris 1.3 from 0-100km/h in 12,6 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 175km/h. Fuel consumption is pegged at 5,8l /100km for the combined cycle.
  • 6-litre petrol unit producing 97kW at 6400rpm and 160Nm of torque at 4400rpm and dispatching the 0-100k/h sprint in 10 seconds. Top speed is clocked at 200km/h. The 1.6 manual consumes an average of 6,2l /100km in the combined cycle; the 1.6 CVT is even more economical, averaging just 6,0l / 100km.
  • 8 Hybrid – this model also receives a make-over for 2015. Details will be disclosed closer to launch at the beginning of September 2015.


Also carried over is the three-tier grading structure:

  • Entry-grade models (X and Xi) are available on 1.3 and 1.6-litre engines. Bluetooth has been added to this spec level. Other spec highlights include Follow-me-home headlights, shark fin antenna, leather gear lever and steering wheel, electric power steering, air conditioner, dual front and side airbags, remote central locking, ABS with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD),seatbelt warning for all occupants, RDS audio four-speaker system, electric windows with Driver One-Touch and steering switches. The X model is shod with 15-inch steel wheels; the Xi model is equipped with 16-inch alloys.
  • The Mid-grade model (Xs) is only available on the 1.6-litre engine. This variant is now also equipped with the all-new display audio featuring electrostatic switchgear. Over and above the entry grade models, Xs also features front fog lamps, piano black gloss finish for the grille and rear bumper with chrome trim accents, reverse camera with guidelines, six-speaker sound system, vanity mirror lamps and Sport fabric upholstery.
  • The High grade models (Xr) are available on the 1.6 manual and CVT as well as the Hybrid Derivative. This model comes with full-house spec including niceties such as auto lights, electrochromatic rearview mirror, colour TFT multi-information display, cruise control, smart entry and push start technology, electronic dual-zone climate control, curtain airbags and a driver’s kneebag, full leather upholstery with seat heaters for the front seats and electric lumbar support for the driver.

Chery, one of the most successful exporters of Chinese domestic brand passenger cars, made good use of the recent Auto Shanghai show to promote its new brand image under the banner New Standard, New Power, New Chery.

The cars on display included two new products, the Arrizo M7 SUV and Tiggo5 1.5T SUV as well as two concept vehicles, the Arrizo 5 and @Ant3, an individualised urban runabout.


Chery also took the opportunity to unveil its iPOWER system, an intelligent power source which integrates traditional and new energy technologies.

Aside from displaying its brand-new products and concept vehicles at Auto Shanghai 2015, Chery also displayed its range of current models, such as Tiggo5, Tiggo3, Arrizo 7, and Arrizo3, in addition to two new-energy car models, the Arrizo7 PHEV (a plug-in hybrid with a 1.6-litre petrol engine and 355 volt lithium-ion battery) and Arrizo3 EV (an electric vehicle with a range of 260km that takes only 30 minutes to charge to 80% of capacity), which all promoted Chery’s advanced technologies.

The growing Arrizo sub-brand is built on Chery’s new iAuto platform which is an updated version of the Chery A3 platform and incorporates Cloudrive telematics, ACTECO powertrains and Cherysma design and quality standards.

2015 Hyundai Veloster gets a boost from 150 kW turbo engine


The Hyundai Veloster range in South Africa has received a shot in the arm with the addition of a turbo-boosted direct petrol injection engine, along with more sporty and luxury features that makes this attractive hatchback a well-rounded sports package.

At its global launch the Veloster Turbo was the first Hyundai to feature the company’s 1,6-litre GDI engine with a high-compression, twin-scroll turbocharger. This T-GDI unit, generating 150 kW maximum power and 265 Nm of torque, has now made its debut in the local Veloster range, with performance figures that are quite a step up from its non-turbocharged sibling which delivers 103 kW and 167 Nm.

“The Veloster Turbo is also pointer to where the Hyundai brand is heading: to produce vehicles with advanced engine and transmission technology that will appeal to car buyers that are looking for an exciting, yet reliable and well-designed automobile. The engine used in the Veloster Turbo forms the base for the power plant in Hyundai Motorsport’s World Rally Championship i20 car – the only difference is that the rally car delivers 200 kW …,” says Stanley Anderson, marketing director of Hyundai Automotive South Africa.

“The heart of the Veloster Turbo is its powerful engine, and the performance that it injects into this innovative sports hatchback in our range. You can watch this space, for this engine is the start of many new developments to come from Hyundai’s Namyang Research and Development Centre in South Korea,” says Anderson.

Maximizing fuel efficiency and performance, the Veloster Turbo’s engine has an air-guided intercooler, direct fuel injection system and dual CVVT, with a bed plate and a serpentine auxiliary belt adopted for enhanced engine reliability

The driving experience is further enhanced by the sport-tuned engine intake and exhaust notes: the trapezoidal centre tailpipes of the normally-aspirated Veloster have been replaced with two larger free-flowing circular pipes, allowing for a more robust sound.

The Veloster Turbo has the same practical appeal as the original model, thanks to the innovative 1+2 door design. It also now features unique front and rear bumpers and fog lights, a new rear spoiler and grille, new 18-inch alloy wheels, projection headlights with unique LED headlight accents, and unique LED taillights.  These elements further accentuate the car’s eye-catching styling and add a greater emphasis on its performance.

Maximum boost from the turbocharger is 18 psi. The twin-scroll turbocharger design has several other advantages over traditional, single-scroll turbocharging systems, including:

  • Improved combustion efficiency;
  • Low engine-speed efficiency;
  • Kinetic exhaust gas energy is not wasted or trapped;
  • Cooler cylinder temperatures;
  • Lower exhaust temperatures; and
  • A leaner air/fuel ratio

Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h takes 7,8 s for the manual derivative, while the Veloster Turbo with the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) is somewhat quicker at 7,3 s. The maximum speed of the manual derivative has been measured at

224 km/h, while the automatic DCT can reach 225 km/h.


Sport-tuned suspension

Complementing the aggressive appearance is the finely tuned suspension setup of the Veloster Turbo, and key components in the steering were upgraded for the Veloster Turbo.

World-class weight efficiency is also a program target for all Hyundai models. The benefit of weight reduction is two-fold, increasing both performance and fuel economy. This priority on weight efficiency allows the Veloster Turbo to deliver a dynamic combination of agility, performance, and fuel efficiency.

New interior features, sound system


Inside, new full leather seats with the word “Turbo” stitched into the seatbacks help deliver a unique look while providing exceptional support and comfort. An exclusive Supervision gauge cluster feeds the driver information in a larger, clearer, and more interactive format by way of two TFT screens located between the tachometer and speedometer.

The Veloster Turbo includes proximity keyless entry with push-button ignition.

Gracenote® technology improves the way Veloster owners access and manage their music. This new system allows the driver to see licensed cover art and use a “More Like This” automatic playlist generator. Gracenote® helps organize song metadata from a driver’s music collection and associates specific genre classifications (Indie Rock, R&B, Classical, etc.) with the identified tracks. In doing so, Gracenote’s Playlist Plus™ technology allows Veloster drivers to create targeted music playlists with a single button or voice command.

A 196-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers and iPod®/USB/AUX connectivity is standard in the Veloster.

Audiophiles can opt for the available 450-watt Dimension premium audio system that features eight speakers, including an eight-inch subwoofer, and an external amplifier.

A Bluetooth® hands-free phone system with voice recognition, address book download, and audio streaming is standard. The Veloster comes standard with an integrated rear-view camera.

Advanced standard safety technology awarded 5-star rating

The Hyundai Veloster has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent vehicle assessment organisation, Euro NCAP.  The results of the rigorous test process include class-best scores for the 1+2 door sports coupe.

The Veloster achieved a rating of 96% in the Adult Occupant category, registering maximum points in the side barrier test and more severe side pole test. In the Child Occupant category, the Veloster attained a score of 89%.

The Veloster is equipped with an exceptional level of standard safety features for the compact coupé segment, including a number of active safety measures. A Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system optimally manages the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle in slippery conditions or during fast cornering.

Jaguar F-Type Bloodhound


Jaguar has announced the F-TYPE R AWD Bloodhound SSC RRV – one of the cars that will support the Bloodhound world land speed record attempt.

The Bloodhound F-TYPE R is the latest project of Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations and is wrapped in a bespoke livery created by Jaguar Design incorporating the Bloodhound SSC colours. Set to be unveiled at the Coventry Motofest, in the UK, later this month, the car will make its way to South Africa for the Bloodhound SSC record attempt in September.

As Technical Partner to Bloodhound SSC, Jaguar is supplying engines, engineering expertise and a number of support vehicles for the attempt to break the world land speed record. The F-TYPE R AWD has already fulfilled a critical role in the development of the Bloodhound SSC with a communications test back in November 2014.

Fitted with the same radio equipment as the rocket-powered Bloodhound SSC, the F-TYPE was driven head-to-head at top speed with a similarly-equipped jet flown at 500 knots and just 20 feet above the ground. The combined closing speed of more than 1 100km/h enabled the successful test of the system that will allow communications between the ground crew and Andy Green in Bloodhound SSC.

Bloodhound SSC is also fitted with the same 405kW supercharged V8 engine found in the Jaguar F-TYPE R. The engine powers the supersonic car’s hydraulic systems, as well as pumping high-test peroxide fuel into its rocket boosters.

The Fiesta ST employs a precision-tuned and driver-focused powertrain and chassis to deliver the ultimate Fiesta driving experience. Developed by Ford’s Team RS, the European arm of Ford’s Global Performance Vehicle group, it is equipped with a 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine to achieve 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and offer 134kW and 240Nm of torque. Top speed is 220 km/h.

Team RS tuned the powertrain, suspension, steering and brakes for optimised driving dynamics; and introduced features only previously found in larger performance cars – including enhanced Torque Vectoring Control (eTVC) and three-mode Electronic Stability Control (ESC), six-speed manual transmission, and rear disc brakes.

Everyday practicality is underlined by fuel efficiency of 5.9 l/100km* and 138 g/km CO2* – a 20 per cent emissions reduction compared with the first generation Fiesta ST, though it produces almost 20 per cent more power than the first generation’s 2.0-litre engine.

Guided all the way: Mercedes-Benz is one of the first to introduce Door-to-Door Navigation with Apple Watch

Stuttgart/Sunnyvale. Mercedes-Benz creates an intelligent integration between Apple Watch and Mercedes-Benz vehicles with its new MB Companion App. The MB Companion App allows Mercedes-Benz costumers to search for directions on the Apple Watch or on iPhone initiating a complete door-to-door experience. A seamless integration unfolds: giving walking directions to the car on the Apple Watch, driving directions on the vehicle navigation system and again walking directions on the Apple Watch from the car to the final destination.

The destination that the driver selects on Apple Watch is passed to Mercedes-Benz COMAND Online once the driver starts the vehicle. He then receives safe and non-distracting driving directions to his selected destination from Mercedes-Benz navigation. When the driver parks and leaves his car, Apple Watch gives him walking directions to the final destination making it the perfect guide for “Last Mile Navigation”.

Samsung Electronics South Africa has further strengthened the service it provides to its South African consumers by presenting warranty and service offerings across its entire product range.
