I was invited by Volkswagen South Africa to embark on a journey which would see myself and other media explore some of the most beautiful roads in South Africa starting off from East London. On route, we would stop at the incredible Kei Mouth Motorcycle Museum which houses Billy Nel’s more than 650 collector motorcycles, we would laugh, enjoy celebrations and building new friendships, watch Volkswagen Falken Polo Cup Racing and explore the Volkswagen sponsored City Surf Series, and finally to top it all, we would experience what life is like in the Caravelle. This is the #CaraCara tour and its all about the journey!
The Caravelle in a nutshell
The Caravelle T6 is a luxury people mover, which offers the ability to be configured and customised in many ways. With the likes of seats which can swivel at the rear, options such as a picnic table, refrigeration box, window blinds and every imaginable creature comfort, the Caravelle is somewhat of a home on wheels.
All powered by a 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine delivering 132kW of power and 400 Nm of torque from low within the rev range, the Caravelle is the ultimate vehicle for covering long journeys and doing it with the entire family. It is for this reason, that is has been responsible for creating countless smiles, memories and has remained part of South African families for generations.
Key Specs of the Caravelle T6 Include:
- 2.0 Bi-Turbo Diesel Motor (132 kW : 400 Nm)
- 4MOTION (Volkswagen All Wheel Drive)
- 7-Speed DSG Gearbox
- Satellite Navigation
- Multimedia System Incl. Apple Carplay & Android Auto abilities
- Driver Assistance Features with Multi-Collision Braking
- Rear View Parking Camera
- LED Lights
- And, finally a world of ability and customisation
Available in several configurations and trim options, the Volkswagen Caravelle saw about 2-million of its predecessor T5 models sell around the world within 11-years (23,400 sold within South Africa). Nearly 12 million vehicles have been sold worldwide since the first model was introduced 65 years ago. In South Africa close to 300,000 units have been sold since the first unit rolled off the assembly line at the Uitenhage manufacturing factory in 1955. All of this is a testament to a vehicle which is much more than just a mode of transport, but rather a vehicle which creates memories, builds stories and remains very much about creating a journey.
