The Volkswagen Golf is the kind of car that is a real Swiss army knife or rather be it a German army knife. It’s a hatchback which is suitable for the family, suitable for moving your belongings and suitable for a bit of fun, or if in its most powerful guise rather a lot of fun!
Though we have had the Golf R on our market for some time in a slightly less powerful version, I am glad to report that Volkswagen Germany has finally decided to give us one in line with that in Europe, meet the latest-generation 228 kW and 400 Nm of torque powered flaming hot-hatch that is the 2019 Golf R.
In a Nutshell
- 228 kW @ 5000 r/min : 400 Nm Torque @ 2000 r/min
- 0 – 100 km/h (claimed 4.6 secs)
- 7-Speed DSG Gearbox
- Starting Price – R676,500 (Incl.VAT)
The Golf is available in many formats. Starting with the TSI and TDI models, and the ever-popular Golf GTI, and more recent Golf GTD, you get many hot Golf’s on the roads. Some time back I drove the Golf GTI Clubsport and to this day it remains one of the best cars which I have ever driven. Now the Golf bares its most powerful engine yet within the all-new Golf R.
With all power driven through VW’s DSG gearbox which is arguably one of the best-automated transmissions on the planet, the Golf R is able to sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in a mere claimed 4.6 seconds, and do all of this in a world of symphonic engine firing sounds, particularly when optioned with the Akrapovic titanium exhaust system. Though this exhaust is an optional extra and costs around R40,000 it, in my opinion, is an absolute must, with sound being produced which is simply euphoric.
The Golf R features the latest in front and rear LED lighting which adds to its subtle, yet menacing appearance. Riding on large diamond-cut Spielberg alloys with exposed “R” brake calipers as optioned on my test unit, the vehicle gives off an imposing presence and one which certainly shows its performance.
With Volkswagen’s dynamic 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system, the Golf feels planted in the wet conditions, while remaining firm and engaging, yet agile all at the same time no matter the surface conditions.
The interior of the Golf R, much like the current Mk 7.5 GTI is a compilation of plush and premium materials, all of which adorn Volkswagen’s optional large touchscreen and proximity-based Composition Multimedia System with the likes of all media sources including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, before mentioning the digital Volkswagen Audi Virtual Cockpit digital instrumentation cluster.
Ahead of the driver is a large display, as first seen in Audi vehicles, and what is certainly one of the best examples of the digital instrumentation display with full customization and navigation in perfect eyeshot.
A spattering of active and passive safety systems, including many driver alert systems make for what is also now the most intuitive and safest Golf ever. Adaptive cruise control is available, as are rear and front traffic alerts as just part of the Golf’s conclusive safety systems.
The Golf R was always a rather special hot hatch and one which truly had a sense of “Vrrrrpa.” This latest generation, however, has certainly seen the vehicle go from hot hatch to firing hot hatch and it remains one of the best hot hatches on the planet.
