Named after a large Berber ethnic confederation, the name Touareg also spelt Twareg /ˈtwɑːrɛɡ/, has for a long time represented a force of mechanical excellence which saw big sales. This is the latest-generation Volkswagen Touareg and it is just bursting with technology, luxury and prowess.
Long Standing Reputation
Now in its third-generation, this all-new Touareg builds on a line of Volkswagen’s most luxurious and technologically advanced SUV’s. The first-generation offered-up many breakthroughs and a level of luxury from Volkswagen which saw the success of the Touareg model leap globally. With the second-generation further pushing things on the luxury and technology front, the bar was set high and now Volkswagen has given us the most advanced Touareg ever!
Though the SUV market segment is an incredibly tough and competitive space, since its inception, the Touareg model has seen sales volumes globally in excess of 1-million units sold. These numbers speak for themselves and the vehicles importance to the Volkswagen brand.
The Clever Stuff
To start things off, the new Touareg rides on the Volkswagen Group’s well established MLB platform, a base which is further shared among the company of super luxury barges such as the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and even Bentley Bentayga SUV. From this solid base, the new model gets VW’s multi-award winning 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel motor, one which is very similar to that seen in the ultra-power Amarok 3.0 V6 Doublecab.
Apart from an engine which produces a whopping 190 kW and 600 Nm of torque all pushed through VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system and 8-speed automated transmission, the new Touareg is crammed with all the latest in automotive technological innovation.
The cabin is a wash of premium materials, with centre stage being taken by a very large centre display when fitted with the Volkswagen Composition Media system and an even larger more immersive system when specced with the Volkswagen Innovision system, easy one of the biggest displays within any vehicle. From every imaginable driver-aid, a wash of safety systems, a multitude of media formats and the likes of impressive mood lighting, driving the new Touareg feels much like piloting a spacecraft.
The Practical Stuff
The MLB platform makes for a fabulously luxurious and spacious cabin with impressive rear-legroom. With space to easily accommodate four adults in the cabin, a boot with a claimed 810-litres of luggage loading capacity and a large 90-litre fuel tank coupled with diesel efficiency, the Touareg is certainly a vehicle built to handle being practical.
Offering everything of the best in terms of luxury and technology and with pricing starting from just over R1-million, the Volkswagen Touareg showcases a lot in the way of modern SUV luxury, technology and safety. Though priced as a premium vehicle, you will be hard-pressed to match or better its overall offering.
