In our modern congested world, we see many families opting for large SUV’s. While there are many great SUV’s to choose from, with Volvo offering the gorgeous new V90 Cross Country, the choice has just got a whole lot tougher!
I have always loved the idea of an estate car, but I can honestly say that this new Volvo is one of the best-looking estate cars ever produced.
Design, Build & Interior
With the Volvo’s Scandinavian inspired design elements, the V90 Cross Country fits in well with the Volvo 90 series architecture. Bold Thors Hammer inspired headlamps and a large grill lead to its imposing presence, and this is all coupled with its elegant simplicity.
The graceful body continues onto its equally subtle, yet imposing and top-notch quality interior. With the most up-to-date levels of technology including Volvo’s Sensus “Ipad” inspired media system and in the case of the review vehicle, Volvo’s Adventure Pack(R75,000) which features include:
o Heated front seats
o Panoramic sunroof
o Powered tailgate
o Head-up display
o Power-folding rear seats
o Auto-dimming side mirrors
o Compass in rear-view mirror
o Visual Park Assist incl. 360-degree HD camera
o Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Cross Traffic Alert
o Park Assist Pilot incl. Park Out function
o Keyless entry and starting, incl. hands-free boot lid opening & closing
o 230V power outlet in rear tunnel console
o Air suspension with Active Chassis
The T6 is powered by an engine which is turbocharged and supercharged, with the supercharger taking care of low-end torque and the turbo kicking in higher up for a smooth overall power delivery. It delivers 235 kW and 400 Nm through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V90 is also available with two diesel engines (D4 ; D5) and an additional petrol driven engine T5 engine. This range topping T6 petrol motor is able to achieve 0 – 100 km/h in a shade over 6 seconds.
Volvo’s multi-award winning diesel engines which are available in the V90 use the ultra-advanced Volvo patented Power Pulse Technology, to see this technology in action, below watch my drive in the Volvo S90 D5 AWD with Power Pulse engine technology.
With a total of 210 mm of ground clearance, the Volvo actually rides high off the ground, well in-line and even succeeding with many modern SUV’s such as the Jaguar F-Pace for ride height.
The large V90 is surprisingly easy to maneuver owing to its wealth of sophisticated driver systems and a spattering of cameras around the body. The large estate also enjoys the graceful drive presence shared among the Volvo S90 sedan and XC90 SUV, further enhanced with the option of air suspension fitted to the vehicle which I explored over the week.
Impressive ride and the Volvo’s silky smooth ride, help make this V90 Cross Country a true all rounder.
Is It Practical?
Yes sums up this question straight off the bat! While it is a large-bodied vehicle, it enjoys the benefit of being an incredibly easy car to live with and enjoy, even when the roads get congested. The array of clever driver aids and systems, including Pilot Assisted Drive, a system developed by Volvo, which literally allows the vehicle to take charge of braking, accelerating and even steering at speeds of upto 130 km/h for 20-seconds at a time, makes driving the Volvo, or rather being “driven” by the Volvo incredibly easy and relaxing.
With its electric folding tailgate, you have 560-litres of luggage load space with the seats folded-up and a whopping 1526-litres when you drop all the seats flat which can be done using one hand, thanks to Volvo’s simple and convenient buttons located in the boot area.
With a vast cabin interior space, sublime levels of quality and 210mm of ride height, there really is no typical family situation which appears to challenge the V90 and its perfect getaway capabilities.
It makes me sad that estate cars are not more prevalent in our local market. With the V90’s sure footed ability, mouth-watering technology and safety systems and majestic ride, it really sits in a class of its own.
