“Sensuous Sportiness” is the term for its new design, rebuilt from the ground-up. The 2021 Hyundai i20 is definitely sensuous and a striking vehicle in comparison to the previous models. The new model has set the standard for safety, tech and styling in a hope to attract the customers away from the VW Polo, Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, Mazda 2 and Toyota Yaris among the B-segment hatchback segment which is ruled by the VW Polo.
There are 2 options in the i20 range on offer; the considerably larger and bold Motion and the Fluid derivatives, all generously equipped with an integrated infotainment system; Apple CarPlay/Android compatible, daytime running lights, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, electric windows, ISOFIX child seat attachments among a lot more across the 1.0 and 1.2 Fluid.
We were lucky to drive both the manual and the automatic versions of the 1.0 in the range. On the first route, we took the DCT (Dual-clutch transmission) out towards Clarens Drive in adverse driving weather; rain, rain and more rain followed by rain. Switching between the self-shifting 7-speed transmission, the 3.0 turbopetrol moved with ease delighting us with a sporty sound and feel, when we were shifting between 2 – 4 in the corners and coming out of them. Once we moved off from 5 – 7, the car moved into what I liked to call a comfortable purr cruising the roads towards the first pitstop outside of Hermanus. One thing we thought was missing was the hill hold assist in the DCT derivative.
We moved onto the manual version at the start of the second route back to Erinvale Golf Estate. I battled at first trying to find a comfortable seating position but once started, moving between the gears was smooth and was always surprised when moving into reverse to see the rearview camera quickly come to life on the infotainment screen to the left of the driving cockpit. The 1.0 manual held the corners on the wet road surface super well and when on a lower gear for too long, the digital display was pointing out kindly to move up to a move fuel-efficient gear where I had the option to activate cruise control; another nifty feature. The feeling of being safe and secure in those conditions really speaks of the suspension and new safety enhancements
If we look at the competitor’s specification options on the market from the Mazda 1.2 , VW Polo 1.0, Kia Rio1.2 and Opel Corsa 1.2, the 2021 Hyundai i20 1.2 Motion comes in at a suggested retail price of R275,900 with the following as standard with the majority on the above going as optional extras at a cost to the consumer.
- Electric Auto-folding Mirrors
- Digital Dashboard
- Parking sensors
- Parking camera rear
- Automatic headlights
- Daytime running lights
- Multifunction steering wheel; Bluetooth, onboard computer)
- Infotainment system
- ABS with EBD
The interior, we battled to flaw for the pricing. Neat, stylish and the materials used across the dashboard and seats felt premium for the segment. Two USB ports in the front, a wireless phone charging mat under the aircon system and a multifunction steering wheel that you’d find in the premium segments.
