Few vehicles manage to pack the essence of space, practicality, speed and the perfect soundtrack all within a beautifully crafted package. Thankfully this one exists, welcome everybody to “Green Hell,” welcome to the new performance thrashing Audi RS4 Avant.
It was some years back that Audi brought the previous-generation RS4 to South Africa, that was the sedan and it came adorning the mighty symphonic orchestra creating 4.2-Litre V8 motor. I remember first seeing that car, hearing its soundtrack and immediately being in amid with Audi’s RS performance division.
Well, this RS division has recently celebrated 25-years of quattro driven performance, and perhaps it’s no coincidence that during this time of celebration, I was privileged enough to spend time with the new RS4 Avant, quite possibly one of the best RS cars in existence.

While its sedan predecessor featured a large V8 powerplant, the new RS4 makes do with a smaller 2.9-Litre V6 turbopetrol motor. Before you get up and leave, bear in mind that the engineers have managed to extract 40% more torque from thus motor and that it produces a whopping 450 BHP, 331 kW and 600 Nm of torque. The result is big figures and even bigger performance. 0 – 100 km/h is dealt with in a claimed 4.1 seconds, not half bad for a large estate or rather Avant.
All power is sent to all wheels in typical quattro fashion, all sent through an 8-speed automated transmission and owing to a clever rear bias differential capable of producing a thrilling yet gripping performance. With a 30 kg reduction in weight and smart all-wheel-drive system, show it dry, wet or in between and the Audi triumphs all. The RS4 Avant therefore, in true Audi style will run rings around its closest powerful competitors thanks to real-world usable performance.
Style Meets Luxury & Space
We see few wagons here in South Africa and that’s a real shame. When a vehicle can turn as many heads and look as good as this Audi does, I really wish more automakers were bringing wagons to market.
The new RS4 Avant is a culmination of form following function. Open air-dampers adorn the front bumpers, while sharp lines and two massive oval tailpipes hint at its subtle, yet impressive presence. While I normally am not a fan of green, Audi’s Sanoma Green is exquisite and garners many on-lookers.
Style and space continue on the inside. In true Audi interior build sense, the RS4 cabin is comprised of beautifully crafted and premium materials. Soft surfaces and options such as a B&O sound system all make for what is a true luxury place. Technology is also of high priority with Audi’s virtual cockpit digital instrument cluster and large MMI central interface.
Wagons always represent practicality and the RS4 unsurprisingly allows for space to pack your mountain bike, the family dog and anything else you can think of.

Few cars can offer the same sense of driver satisfaction, the same soundtrack and the same level of practicality as the Audi RS4 Avant. Though it comes at a large price tag, when you experience it, you immediately realise it is worth every cent!
