There are some automobiles in the world which are designed to get you from “A” to “B,” and then there are others which are designed to get you from “A” to “B” but do it very quickly and with a sense of emotive passion, performance and sheer driving pleasure.
What is a BMW M4 Coupé with a Competition Pack?
Well, to start off, BMW engineers have taken a standard M4, a vehicle which is not exactly dull and added a spattering of new styling and performance parts. The result is an M4 which looks meaner than ever, has more power and aggression than before and put simply is a sensation to drive.
The emotive journey actually starts before you get inside and way before you even begin to fire its 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine to life. From a standstill, the Competition Pack adds unique and bold styling touches, such as beautiful “star” design 20-inch alloy wheels. The wheels enhance the large ventilated brake discs and gorgeous contrast brake callipers.
Apart from the Competition wheels, the package also adds blackened tips for the quad exhaust system, blackened M badging around the body, blackened kidney-grille bars and incredibly sporty and supportive seats.
The Power Of Competing
Competition is about far more than just looking the part. As a result, the BMW engineers have added an additional 14 kW of power, increasing the power output of this model to a whopping 331 kW and 550 Nm of torque. The result is 0-100km/h in a blistering 4.0-seconds and a top speed which can be limited and governed at 280 km/h.
All of this power comes with what can only be described as a symphony orchestra of induction, especially when you have set-off in Sport Plus mode and set the gearbox to maximum shift ferocity with all the power driven through its DCT gearbox which shifts like lightning.
Could I Live With It?
The M4 with Competition Pack is undeniably a complete animal, but weirdly it can be incredibly civilised and well behaved. Set into what BMW term “Efficient” drive, the vehicle softens-up, it becomes far quieter and burns less fuel, it even rides much softer over uneven surfaces.
In the efficient drive mode, you suddenly realise that despite its ferocious power, the M4 is actually incredibly practical. It offers an impressively large boot (claimed at 445-litres), it will even seat four adults in comfort and the interior is in true BMW style dressed in impressive, premium and beautifully appointed materials.
Multimedia is dealt with compliments of the latest BMW Connected Drive Services and even features the likes of live weather, traffic and concierge services while on the go, this is not to mention the wide array of media sources which the system supports. The driver is treated to a large-scale heads-up-display and even this has an M specific tachometer and design.
Whats The Price For All This Magic in SA & Final Words
The BMW M4 Coupé Competition Pack M-DCT will set cost you R1412,136 (time of publishing). The M4 Coupé Competition is sold with a 2-year/unlimited km warranty and 5-year/100,000 km maintenance plan.
Recent times have seen the German triumphant performance brands introducing a spattering of new derivatives to the ever popular market space and while some may argue their personal preferences in terms of design and exhaust bark, it will be very tough to argue to the BMW’s proper driver focussed dynamic drive, sensual design and true sheer driving pleasure which it offers.
