It’s fair to say that there are few names in the motoring world which hold quite the same amount of immediate recognition as Ford’s iconic Mustang. I remember my uncle having a Mustang here in South Africa when I was growing-up, I remember seeing it feature in countless movie scenes over the years and most of all I always remember thinking how cool it would be to own one.
I was extremely fortunate to attend the South African media launch of the new 2019 Ford Mustang and experience first-hand why this automobile holds such as special place within the kid in all of us.
We began the journey meeting the new Mustang’s all parked in bright vibrant colours and all in a fleet at the Cape Town International Airport, from here we would embark on what would be a simply unforgettable time behind the wheel of both the 2.3-litre Ecoboost model, the powerful 5.0-litre V8 and the incredibly fierce Mustang Bullitt limited to just 50 units for South Africa.
The exterior styling of the new Mustang immediately resembles the style of its predecessor, only now Ford has sharpened the creases, edges and lines into what is now, in my opinion, the most aggressive, stylish and crafted Mustang ever created. Hankering back where things all kicked-off in 1964, the new Pony still features many original tribute lines of its first-generation model, only now it further adds so much in the way of modern 21st-century technology.
The automatic variants of the new Mustang now feature 10-speed automatic gearboxes, with rapidly fast and impressive shifts. Power figures are up as well, with the 2.3-litre model now producing 213kW and 441Nm of torque (11 kW’s more than it did before) and the powerful 5.0-litre V8 now pushing out 331kW (up from 309 kW), and a very large 529Nm of torque. The result of this is that the new mustang can now sprint off the mark in what can only be described as an eye blink and in a manner, which is just so easy to handle.
Ford explained how they have reworked much of the vehicle’s internal components and it definitely makes for an experience which is epic.
When I think Mustang, I think rock n roll. This new mustang has an incredible interior. The seats are comfortable and very supportive, the perfect place to sink back and enjoy the Ford’s easy to use and very advanced multimedia player. Using Ford’s Sync 3 system, it was easy to pair my phone and sync across my favourite tune for the ride ahead.
Another feature of the interior which I absolutely loved, is Ford’s new digital instrument display. A large 12-inch display screen up ahead me, showed all the vehicle performance figures and even had the ability to be customised in a way which made it really stand out from anything else which I have seen. Race display screens and colours all help make the interior of the new Mustang feel as special as that of its exterior design.
I was given the chance to also get up close and experience The Bullitt “Aka Steve Mcqueen” Mustang. This incredible tribute car is not only very limited, but also features a solid black grille design with no Mustang badge, large black alloy wheels and own unique interior as well to match. In what has to be the most menacing Mustang on the planet, the new Bullitt edition takes uber cool to new heights.
During the journey with Ford South Africa, I would drove many kilometres, experienced many sprinting Pony’s and shared many great laughs. From enjoying dinner with dance, staying overnight in the quaint town of Montague, then visiting Ford’s wildlife outreach program, and finally driving so many roads which feel like those in the great United States, I was able to experience the magic of the new Mustang and see why Ford is still producing a vehicle which has a special place within some many of us.
