During any given year, I consider myself very fortunate to be afforded the opportunity to drive many different vehicles of all shapes, sizes and price points. 2020, however, would prove to be a very different kind of year with many months spent couped-up inside simply dreaming of an open road and adventure. Amongst other things, what it certainly had me asking myself is “what would be an ideal vehicle to embark upon the festive season?” The answer presented itself in the form of a vehicle which is large, rugged, luxurious and above all able to handle any situation thrown its way, the Isuzu D-Max double cab!
I have always considered myself a massive fan of Isuzu brands bold no-nonsense image. It’s simple, yet functional and above embodies strength, something which the brand is synonymous with. The 2020 D-Max features a bold style which fits perfectly with its attitude. Over at the front, the large chrome Isuzu lettering makes it immediately distinguishable, while its diamond-cut alloy wheels and impressive ride-height give it a true go-anywhere ability and striking appearance.
This strength-inspired outer image is must more than just a bold appearance though, the D-Max is rugged through-and-through. With its central rotary 4×4 selector I tackled several rough terrains over my period of testing, and it was able to walk over any rugged scenario. All of this coupled with very competent on-road manners thanks to its tried and tested 3.0-litre turbodiesel motor which delivers a very healthy 130 kW ; 380 Nm of torque. Also on offer is the D-Max’s ability to tow a 3.5 tonne braked trailer.
With so many things being off-bounds during these modern pandemic times, your vehicle offers one of the few family sanctuaries in which you can safely enjoy time spent together. This was an element which I could certainly take advantage of with the mass of space on offer throughout this double cab. From its wealth of interior storage spaces and cupholders to its climate-controlled air-conditioning, USB ports, large 8-inch multimedia system with mirror link technology to reversing camera, nothing was left out.
Take all of the above and add a very large load bay at the back, and one optioned here with a locking canopy, and you have the perfect space to carry luggage and a few mountain bikes for that family getaway.
Is it the perfect family vehicle?
From my perspective it most definitely is! It offers the bold and rugged image, it offers the space, comfort and technological features which make it a great all-round commuter and it offers the utility elements which make it the perfect working tool as well. Combine all of this with Isuzu’s piece of mind warranty (The Isuzu D-MAx is sold with a 5-year/120 000 km warranty and a 5-year/90 000km service plan.) and proven track record over many decades and you have the recipe for a simply epic double cab and one which made my festive season extra special.
