The Land Rover Discovery has always been considered a multi-purpose tool. Think of it as a luxurious Swiss, or British army knife built to take on both the urban and rural jungle.
I have been up in the Gauteng Province to sample the all-new fifth-generation Discovery model and see what it has in store.
This latest generation features a softer more moulded body design, while still coupling the rugged profile that we have come used to, with the Discovery. Land Rover speak at great length of how the enhanced new design now further improves the Discovery’s versatility and practicality both on and off the road.
Power is delivered compliments of two available engines within the line-up. There is a 3.0-litre turbodiesel unit which offers up 190 kW & 600 Nm of torque. I thoroughly enjoyed the output of this turbodiesel motor. Owing to its high torque output, you can easily ascend relentless terrain, without even putting any strain on the motor. The diesel powerplant also manages to deliver really impressive real-world on-road consumption figures and a wealth of power. During the launch, my Discovery was reflecting 8.1-litres/100km on road. When you consider the size and capability of the Discovery, this is a really commendable effort and very close to Land Rovers claimed 7.8-litres/100km on the diesel.
You also get a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine which develops a very healthy 250 kW & 450 Nm of torque making for a seriously sporty drive in the Discovery. While the petrol engine is more thirsty, it does offer an incredibly exhilarating ride and with both engines mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, incredibly smooth power delivery.
The new Discovery is available with 4 trim levels. This includes the S, SE, HSE and an HSE Luxury models. All models within the line-up from SE upwards featuring the silky smooth air suspension, a brilliant satellite navigation system and beautiful LED lights as standard.
On both HSE and HSE Luxury models, the new Discovery also features JLR’s large 10.2-inch In-Control multimedia system with media deliverable from every imaginable source and even the inclusion of up to 9 USB linked devices and 6 12 volt power sockets. With sport in the new Discovery’s DNA, the vehicle is also offered with JLR’s Smart Activity Key, similar to that of the Jaguar F-Pace, this new key is waterproof and great for taking on sporting adventures.
This multitude of connectivity and power sockets as well as the inclusion of two rear-facing display monitors and the Discovery’s ability boost a WIFI hotspot signal for up to 8 separate devices, helps make this latest generation Discovery one of the smartest tech vehicles on and off the road. Smart tech is coupled with Land Rover expected luxury, with the ability to have sound delivered through the high-powered Meridian 825 W surround sound system.
Comfort All Around
With seating for seven adults in complete luxury and additional convenience features including an electronic tailgate (standard on the HSE and HSE Luxury models), even featuring a built-in safety, that will stop the gate closing should an occupant’s hands be in the way. The seating arrangement is clever too and can be configured via your smartphone, a real first in smart SUV technology.
Apart from the wealth of interior space and smart cabin layout ability, you immediately notice that the new Discovery instrument panel has a much sparser and more minimalistic flow, much in-keeping with the Range Rover Sport and that of the company’s exciting new Velar model soon to hit the streets.
A Multi-Purpose Tool
With luxury and refinement that makes the Discovery feel right at home parked in front of the swaggiest nightclub or hotel and the ability to tow 3500kg, wade through 900mm of water and climb any terrain, thanks to Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 system, the new Discovery really is built to tackle anything lets you #ExploreMore.
