30 November, 2015 – Arguably the most anticipated new model introduction in Ford South Africa’s illustrious history, the launch of the Ford Mustang, has finally become a reality, to the delight of motoring enthusiasts countrywide.
The new Mustang is Ford’s most revered and recognisable nameplate, having become an automotive icon the moment it was launched in 1964, followed by more than 50 years of continuous production and over nine-million cars sold to fans around the world.
The latest Mustang, unveiled on 17 April 2014 to mark its remarkable 50th anniversary, is now finally available for sale in South Africa following the commencement of right-hand drive production for the first time at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.
“This is the car we’ve all been waiting for! The mighty new Mustang is here,” says Tracey Delate, General Marketing Manager, Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region.
“We’re delighted to finally be able to offer the new Mustang to local buyers who flooded Ford dealers with queries and orders when we announced last year that it would be coming to South Africa. It’s been a long wait, but it has certainly been worth it!”
The new Mustang has been a global hit since it was launched internationally last year, and was the world’s best-selling sports car in the first half of 2015. It is the world’s most-liked vehicle on Facebook (with more than eight million likes), and has made more than 9 000 appearances in television, music and video games. It has co-starred in films with Hollywood stars Will Smith, Nicholas Cage, Jason Statham, Tom Cruise, and perhaps most memorably Steve McQueen – in the cult 1960s movie Bullitt.
The new Mustang is loaded with innovative technologies and delivers dazzling performance and style. It is available in a comprehensive line-up spanning six model derivatives, including the sleek and seductive Fastback, as well as the stunning Convertible.
In terms of powertrains, buyers have the option of a roaring 5.0-litre V8 or the all-new 2.3 EcoBoost engine that delivers an exceptional combination of performance and fuel economy. Notably, both engines can be matched to a choice of either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, and there’s the option of both Fastback and Convertible body styles to suit every taste.
The clean-sheet design of the Ford Mustang Fastback and Convertible evokes the essential character of the vehicle, retaining key design elements of the classic Mustangs recognisable to car fans across the world, including the long sculpted hood and short rear deck, with a contemporary execution.
Several key design features define the Mustang, including its low roof height and wide stance, the sleek profile enabled by the steeply sloped windshield and rear glass, the contemporary execution of the iconic car’s signature trapezoidal grille and shark-bite front fascia, plus the famous three-dimensional tri-bar tail lamps
Ford Mustang Convertible drivers will appreciate the standard multilayer insulated cloth top that gives the car an upscale appearance and a quiet cabin. The top has a sleek profile when folded for sun-soaked open-air motoring.
Large, clear instrumentation puts vehicle information right in front of the driver in the roomy cabin with an aviation-inspired cockpit, while ergonomic and tactile switches and knobs provide intuitive control. The vehicle’s width and sophisticated rear suspension contribute to impressive shoulder and hip room for passengers and a usefully shaped boot space that can accommodate two golf bags.
The Mustang experience
The way Ford Mustang looks, drives and sounds is key to the visceral experience. The Mustang offers outstanding power options and an advanced chassis designed to meet the expectations of the most demanding drivers.
Ford’s acclaimed 5.0‑litre V8 engine employs sequential multiport electronic fuel injection and variable camshaft timing to produce a hefty 306kW of power, along with a thunderous 530Nm of torque. As the most powerful and fastest-accelerating Ford ever sold in South Africa, this enables the Mustang 5.0 V8 GT Fastback Manual to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.8 sec.
The line-up includes the all-new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine that brings state-of-the-art technology to Mustang, delivering turbocharged performance with outstanding fuel efficiency. This ground-breaking engine uses direct injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging to deliver impressive all-round performance with 233kW and 430Nm of torque on top – sufficient to achieve a remarkable 0-100km/h time of 5.8 sec for the 2.3 EcoBoost Fastback Manual.
Despite its dynamic potential, the 2.3 EcoBoost engine uses just 8.0 l/100km* in the combined cycle, linked to 179 g/km CO2 emissions*.
Both engines can be specified with a slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission in Fastback guise, or the option of the six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission (Fastback and Convertible). Combined with race car-inspired paddle-shifters on the steering wheel, the automatic gearbox delivers superb convenience and ultimate control.
A Mustang for the true driving enthusiast
The Ford Mustang features a perimeter subframe in the front suspension, which helps stiffen the front structure while reducing mass. This provides a strong foundation for predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride.
A double ball-joint front MacPherson strut system enables the use of large, powerful brakes. Both 2.3‑litre EcoBoost and V8-powered GT Mustang models feature high-performance brake packages behind 19‑inch wheels as part of the Performance Pack fitted as standard on all South African models. On the V8-powered GT models, six-piston Brembo front callipers ensure formidable stopping power.
The Performance Pack also incorporates a ‘K-brace’ under the bonnet to secure the suspension strut towers to the bulkhead for improved stability, unique chassis tuning, a larger radiator, upsized sway bar on the Fastback, plus heavy-duty front springs.
At the rear is an all-new integral-link independent rear suspension. The geometry, springs, dampers and bushings all have been specifically modified and tuned for this high-performance application. Specially developed aluminium rear knuckles help reduce unsprung mass for exceptional ride and handling.
Weight distribution of 54 per cent at the front for the 5.0-litre V8 and 53 per cent at the front for the 2.3‑litre EcoBoost contributes to responsive and precise handling, capable of delivering up to 0.97 g-force when cornering.
Lightweight materials include aluminium used for the bonnet, front wings, suspension, transmission and brakes. High-strength steels, laser welding and hydro-forming techniques contribute to the stiffer body for an enhanced driving experience and safety.
The new New Mustang features a significant number of innovative technologies, providing drivers with enhanced information, control and connectivity.
On a twisty back road or a weekend track day, the driver can use the toggle switches on the console to quickly adjust steering effort, engine response, and transmission and electronic stability control settings.
Using the Selectable Drive Modes, drivers are able to adjust the AdvanceTrac electronic stability control, throttle response, automatic gear-shift patterns and steering to match Normal, Sport+, Track or Snow/Wet settings. Selectable Effort Electric Power Assisted Steering enables drivers to choose a Normal, Comfort or Sport steering weight and feel.
To help drivers get the most from the car at the track, the Mustang also delivers Track Apps that can be controlled via the steering wheel and viewed in the instrument panel, including accelerometer, acceleration timer and brake performance, which measures braking time and distance from a set speed.
Available for the 5.0-litre V8 with manual transmission, the Launch Control system holds the engine at a pre-set value between 3 000 and 4 500 r/min with the accelerator fully depressed. When the clutch is released, torque delivery to the rear wheels is controlled for maximum traction and consistent standing starts. An electronic Line Lock system also available for the 5.0-litre V8 applies only the front brakes, allowing drivers to the warm the rear tyres.
Innovative Performance Features, Airbags and Safety Systems for New Ford Mustang
- Advanced controls technology with Selectable Drive Modes, Track Apps incorporating launch control and electronic line-lock

- SYNC®2 and MyKey® and individual Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
The New Mustang features a significant amount of innovative technologies providing drivers with enhanced information, control and connectivity when they want it. From Intelligent Access with push-button start to SYNC®2 and MyKey® in every new Mustang built, plus standard Track Apps™, MyColor® gauges and high-end audio system, drivers are able to customize their time behind the wheel.
The feeling of freedom and confidence Mustang instils in its drivers is amplified when they can take control of how the car behaves. On a twisty back road or a weekend track day, the driver can tap the toggle switches on the console to quickly adjust steering effort, engine response, and transmission and electronic stability control settings using the available Selectable Drive Modes to create the perfect experience at any time.
The advanced new Ford-developed stability control system is tuned to maximize Mustang’s dynamic capabilities. When the time comes to turn up the wick at a track, new Mustang GT includes standard launch control on manual-transmission models that enables drivers to achieve smooth, consistent starts every time.* The Electronic line-lock and launch control technology – standard on the Mustang GT with manual transmission – can help drivers achieve more consistent performance from run to run.
With the electronic line-lock feature enabled, when a driver releases the brake pedal, the hydraulic control unit for the stability control system will keep the front brakes locked while releasing the rear brakes. When Mustang is sitting in the burnout box of a drag strip, for example, the driver can apply the accelerator to spin up the rear wheels to warm the tyres for maximum grip. This can all be done without having to balance one foot on the brake and the other on the accelerator pedal, or install a mechanical line-lock.
With the tyres properly warmed up, drivers can pull up to the staging line, engage launch control, and get a perfect catapult as soon as the lights go green.
The Track Apps function includes launch control and electronic line-lock (on the V8 manual), as well as an accelerometer, acceleration timer and brake performance display.
SYNC®2 lets drivers control their smartphone and multimedia devices to listen to their favourite form of entertainment. The system includes voice control, Bluetooth connectivity, eight-inch colour touch screen, dual USB ports and an SD card slot. The new Mustang’s reverse parking sensors, with visuals in the display screen, will also help with those tricky parking situations.
Ford MyKey is fitted as standard on the Mustang, allowing up to four keys to programmed, controlling aspects such as vehicle speed, audio volume, driver-assist features and seatbelt reminders. An individual Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is also provided.
Pioneering new airbag technology
An all-new inflatable airbag restraint design that debuts on the Ford Mustang provides the front seat passenger with knee airbag protection while significantly reducing system size and weight, enabling a roomy interior for more comfort.
An inflatable plastic bladder is integrated into the glove box door and provides front passenger knee protection similar to a conventional knee airbag mounted under the instrument panel.
To make the new knee airbag possible, Ford engineers developed and tested innovative materials and construction techniques. Unlike a traditional fabric airbag, the new system consists of a pliable, injection-moulded plastic bladder sandwiched between the inner and outer glove box door panels.
After an applicable vehicle impact is detected by the crash sensor system and classified, an inflator fills the bladder, extending the entire glove box outer door panel toward the front passenger’s legs. Once deployed, the outer door helps to provide cushioning in a manner similar to a traditional knee airbag.
Since the glove box-integrated airbag extends straight out from the instrument panel, it doesn’t have to travel as far as a conventional airbag, which deploys toward the floor before curving upward. Since the glovebox door distributes the impact load over a larger area than a traditional airbag, it is able to operate at a lower inflation pressure.
Convenience features in the Mustang include Auto wipers and lights, adjustable LED mood lighting (which also allows you to change the colours of your gauges), puddle lamps with the projected Mustang logo, Illuminated door sills, and 8-way adjustable electronic seats (standard) with heating and cooling function
The Mustang is also equipped with disc brakes all round incorporating four-sensor, four-channel ABS, complemented by AdvanceTrac electronic stability control.
On the Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost, 352mm ventilated front brake discs are controlled by four-piston aluminium callipers, along with 330mm vented discs and a single-piston calliper at the rear.
The V8-powered Mustang GT boasts larger 380mm front discs along with advanced six-piston Brembo callipers up front for phenomenal stopping power.
Power, Performance and Fuel Efficiency with New Ford Mustang
- 0-litre V8 engine delivers performance and character fans expect from the iconic new Mustang
- New 2.3-litre EcoBoost brings turbocharging to the new Mustang with exceptional power, torque and fuel efficiency
- Manual transmissions provide smooth shifting, automatic transmissions feature steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters
The new Ford Mustang offers a choice of advanced engines and manual or automatic transmissions, delivering power and performance that’s worthy of the Mustang badge.
No Mustang engine line-up would be complete without a great V8 engine at its core. The 5.0-litre V8 engine powers into a new generation with a host of features designed to deliver exceptional performance, especially at higher engine speeds.
Getting air into the cylinders and exhaust out is the key to generating more power and torque from any engine, and that has been the focus of development on the V8. It features large intake and exhaust valves, specially adapted intake and exhaust camshafts and stiff valve springs for precise control of valves at high engine revolutions.
This is complemented by a cylinder head casting with ports that provide a straight-as-possible path to the valves for optimum intake and exhaust flow, along with a combustion chamber tailored to accommodate the large valves.
Sinter forged connecting rods are light and durable for high-rev operation, while the rebalanced forged crankshaft also supports high engine speeds.
The intake manifold includes charge motion control valves to partially close off port flow at lower engine speeds. This increases the air charge tumble and swirl for improved air-fuel mixing, and results in optimal fuel economy, idle stability and low emissions.
The variable camshaft timing on the intake side has a wide range of adjustment thanks to mid-lock phasers. This enables better optimised control of the valve timing over a broader range of engine speeds and loads in the interests of fuel economy and emissions.
All of this contributes to a hefty power output of 306kW and 530Nm – making the new Mustang the most powerful and fastest-accelerating car Ford has ever sold in South Africa. The 5.0 V8 GT Manual is capable of galloping from zero to 100 km/h in a mere 4.8 sec.
Advanced 2.3 EcoBoost
The all-new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine brings turbocharging to the Mustang powertrain line-up, and is specifically designed for this model to meet the needs of drivers looking for performance and fuel efficiency.
The intake manifold and turbocharger housing are optimised to provide excellent breathing and higher output for this application, offering 233kW of power and peak torque of 430Nm, thus fitting the bill for a true Mustang powerplant.
“The 2.3 EcoBoost engine delivers the healthy output that Mustang drivers expect with a broad, flat torque curve and great driveability under any conditions,” said Scott Makowksi, Ford EcoBoost powertrain engineering manager.
The newest member of Ford’s global family of EcoBoost engines, the 2.3-litre engine leverages state-of-the-art technologies including direct fuel injection, twin independent variable camshaft timing and turbocharging to produce big-engine power and torque with improved fuel efficiency.
This is the first Ford engine to utilise a low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger that provides quicker boost response while enabling lower emissions and improved efficiency. The cylinder head features an integrated exhaust manifold that separates the inner and outer pairs of cylinders into each inlet passage to the turbo.
Keeping the exhaust pulses separated from the next cylinder in the firing order eliminates mixing losses and maximises pulse energy to the turbine wheel. The result is quicker torque delivery when the driver needs it for passing manoeuvres, and similar performance to a twin-turbocharger configuration.
The separated exhaust ports also enable the exhaust valves to stay open longer for reduced pumping losses that improve specific fuel consumption by about 1 percent.
With such high power output, ensuring durability was critical. Enhancements to the new Mustang EcoBoost engine to withstand the stresses include:
- Forged-steel crankshaft
- Piston-cooling jets
- Steel piston ring carriers
- Premium bearing materials
- Upgraded valve seat materials
- Forged-steel connecting rods
- High-pressure die-cast aluminium cylinder block with ladder-frame bearing caps
- Deep-sump, die-cast aluminium oil pan
Despite the obvious performance potential, with an impressive 0-100m/h acceleration time of 5.8 sec, the 2.3 EcoBoost engine uses just 8.0 l/100km* in the combined cycle, linked to 179 g/km CO2 emissions*.
New Mustang blends outstanding all-around performance and everyday usability. Drivers who prefer to let the car handle the shifting during their daily work run, but still want to take control when the roads get twisty, will appreciate the steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles with rev-matching downshifts that are standard with the six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.
Enthusiasts looking for the ultimate levels of control and driving involvement may opt for the Mustang’s Getrag six-speed manual transmission that boasts a shift linkage designed for precision and slick engagement.
With a choice of powertrains to match driving styles and lifestyles, Ford’s famous ‘pony car’ has contemporary technology under the hood to match its modern design and yet remain quintessentially Mustang.
Sleek, Contemporary and Unmistakably New Mustang
- Clean-sheet design evokes the undeniable character of new Ford Mustang
- New Mustang is the first Ford with front-wheel aero curtains that help guide airflow across the front wheels
- Careful shaping of new Mustang’s front and rear help to keep the car planted on the road for confident handling and steering at high speeds
The bold, muscular form of the new Ford Mustang reimagines the iconic sports car shape in a way that retains the character that fans expect from the brand while incorporating aerodynamic technology that improves fuel efficiency and performance.
“Even with the classic, forward-leaning shark-bite grille and an aggressive stance for the new Mustang, the aerodynamics team has made it slice through the air smoothly for increased fuel efficiency while also keeping it planted to the road at higher speeds,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “The best part is that they met the challenge of creating the sleekest Mustang yet without resorting to a characterless teardrop shape.”
In optimising the aerodynamics, the design team adopted a pioneering approach for the new Mustang, giving it the first Ford application of wheel aero curtains. Vertical slots in the outer edge of the front fascia channel air from the front of the car to openings in the wheel wells, directing it across the outer surface of the wheel and tyre. The wall of high-speed air works much like a skirt to reduce drag while still leaving the beautifully designed alloy wheels fully exposed.
In addition to helping define the visual identity of a car like Mustang, the grille also has to provide an inlet for air that cools the engine. Allowing air to flow through the engine bay instead of directing it around the sides and over the top of the body increases drag. Each of Mustang’s two engines gets a unique grille that allows in only as much air as that powerplant needs.
Active grille shutters will help make Mustang, powered by the new 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, even more fuel efficient by further reducing drag at higher speeds when extra cooling capacity is not needed. The shutters can completely close off the grille, sending air over and around the car instead of through the engine compartment. Even the ribs that make up the mesh in the grille have been carefully shaped to reduce air resistance and wind noise.
Keeping the car planted
With the performance and speed of the V8-powered Mustang GT, in particular, ensuring confident and precise handling is crucial. Accordingly, the Mustang is equipped with splitters and air dams below the front fascia that help to minimize air under the car.
Stunning New Mustang Convertible
Designed from the wheels up to deliver maximum drop-top enjoyment, the Ford Mustang convertible is a fantastic way to escape the daily grind of life and hit the open road. With its distinct style and a completely redesigned top system, drivers can enjoy the shining sun or sparkling stars quicker with all of the performance and character expected of the Mustang.
Creating the new Mustang convertible involved far more than just slicing the top off the Fastback. The two cars were designed and engineered from the ground up, incorporating an array of visually subtle, but important, changes to make sure each stood on its own while meeting increased standards of quality, performance and refinement.
“From the start, we committed to giving Mustang convertible a unique look from the Fastback with the clean, cohesive design it deserved,” said Joel Piaskowski, exterior design director. “From the raised and straightened muscle line on the rear haunches to the contoured trunk lid, the new Mustang convertible has a more linear quality whether the top is up or down, giving the car its own distinct presence on the road.”
For the first time on Mustang, every convertible roof gets a full fabric outer layer for the roof plus a full inner headliner to enclose the five-bow structure. Sandwiched in between these layers is a full 10-millimeter thick insulation pad that makes the convertible nearly as quiet inside with the top up as the fastback.
“A great deal of effort went into details such as the shape of the rear quarter windows so that they could drop completely out of sight when the top is down,” said Piaskowski. “The top system was carefully refined to prevent unsightly folds or ‘ears’ at the rear corners of the roof when it’s up.”
Lowering the Z-fold roof is a simple and easy process. A centre-mounted single latch offers quick one-handed operation right from the driver’s seat. The new electromechanical drive system lowers the roof in seven seconds and raises it in ten, with just a press of a button on the centre console.
A well-engineered top and dramatically upgraded cabin are just part of making a great convertible sports car. Like the Fastback, the Mustang Convertible features extensive use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels throughout the body structure.
Torsional stiffness of the convertible body has been increased by 13 percent compared to the previous-generation Mustang to produce a more stable platform to better take advantage of the new fully independent suspension. The result is superb ride quality over any road surface and great handling when pressed into the curves.
New Mustang Convertible inspires drivers to put the top down and hit the road, so having usable cargo space is a big plus. The compact roof and flat load floor enabled by the independent rear suspension ensures that the 332-litre luggage compartment is big enough to swallow two large golf bags. The Mustang Fastback boasts a 408-litre capacity.
The information and controls an active driver needs are all readily accessible in the aviation-inspired cockpit, which is executed with the highest degree of craftsmanship ever found in a New Mustang.
Large, clear instrumentation puts vehicle information right in front of the driver in the spacious cabin, while the exceptional ergonomics and tactile switches and knobs guarantee intuitive control.
