With South Africa being a key strategic market for Mahindra Motors, we were invited to attend the SA media launch of the new Pik Up in the Magaliesburg region outside of Johannesburg.
Refreshed Looks, Refreshed Toughness
From the outside, the styling changes immediately distinguish the Pik Up as a tough, rugged and ultimately confident vehicle, which has been built to tackle the rough stuff, as well as remaining sharp and elegant around the urban jungle.
The inclusion of daytime LED running lights and bold headlights on either side of the grill, make for the S10 Double Cab’s signature styling. With the redesigned front-end, also comes the inclusion of some well styled 16-inch alloy wheels.
The interior space of the new Pik Up has also been vastly improved, with overall impressive cabin ergonomics and the use of improved materials throughout. The centre of the dash, now also includes a six-inch full-colour touch-screen display, with media deliverable through major sources including USB and Bluetooth. The S10 Double Cab is a flagship vehicle and as a result, it benefits from features such as remote central locking, cruise control, navigation and a multifunction steering wheel, all features which bring the element of luxury into its rugged designer lifestyle.
The updated 2.2- litre four-cylinder mHawk turbodiesel engine which makes use of a variable geometry turbocharger, produces 103kw of power and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, which assists in making the new vehicle from Mahindra a true performer off-road and one with the ability to tow a capacity of an impressive 2,500kg. With a torque peak of 320 Nm achievable at a low 1 600 r/min, the grunt from the mHawk motor managed to impress both on-road and when tackling some rough off-road situations in the mountainous Magaliesburg region.
The South African “Bakkie” or pick-up truck market is fast emerging, with many automakers setting their sights on capturing either luxury or tough appeal, which these type of vehicles aim to offer the consumer. The added luxury element of many modern pickups ultimately often lead to their higher price points, however, Mahindra has taken a different approach, offering both tough-rated luxury, coupled with more importantly an offering of highly competitive pricing and in-line with Mahindra’s philosophy, excellent value for money.
