Road safety is of pivotal importance to both vehicle occupants and other road users alike. It is for this very reason that I would like to highlight some simple, easy and effective control measures which can be implemented in order to create improved road safety and awareness.

The Commercial Driver

Much of the traffic on our busy roads is comprised of commercial trucks and lorries. With thousands upon thousand of commercial truck drivers spending countless hours on our motorways, it is essential that certain guidelines for improved road safety are adhered to:

1) Adopt a rigorous vehicle selection, inspection and maintenance processes

The transport companies should adopt a rigorous vehicle inspection program. This will ensure that the vehicles which are placed on the road are continuously checked for signs of wear and have complied with basic road conditions, such as a passed road worthy certificate and valid license disk. This is the first step to safe commercial transport.

2) Engage and communicate with your employees

Regular employee engagement will ensure that you as the employer are able to address the physical and mental state of your drivers on a regular basis. This will make for a happy work force and ensure that your drivers can give off their best in terms of both safety and performance on the job.

3) Develop road safety policies and safe work procedures

A road safety program needs policies that describe the plan for action. It’s key to include a policy which states management’s commitment to road safety and standard operating procedures of which to adhere to, should a potential hazardous road traffic situation occur.

Think of this plan as a “what to do” when the unexpected arises. This plan can also include emergency contacts and services to ensure the effective and appropriate methods to deal with any hazardous situation.

4) Establish who will monitor and administer your road safety program

This requires allocating a responsible team leader who will randomly perform spot checks on all vehicles and drivers within the fleet.  Correctly performing this function will ensure that all vehicle checks and safety procedures are adhered to and performed correctly.

5) Regularly evaluate program effectiveness and make improvements

A program is only as good as its application. You may have developed a water tight operating procedure and plan of action, but in ever-changing world, you must constantly mould, adapt and keep up with the surrounding environment.

To keep up-to-date may require finding new procedures and methods as well as applying new forms of safety systems and technology to constantly stay ahead of the game.

This has been 5 basic steps to make our roads. It is important to remember that road safety only works if we all play our part!
