The SUV, it’s a motoring segment of which we all want a piece. Most modern-day drivers seem to be opting for crossovers or fully-fledged 4×4’s because of their practicality and doing anything abilities, but let’s not forget that its vehicles like the Subaru Forester that were at the forefront of this trend. Evolution Is A Great Thing!
Now in its 5th-generation, the new Forester retains some of its looks which were present on its predecessor, however, it does so while tastefully implementing sharper-lines and more pronounced daytime-running lights.
Riding on Subaru’s Global Platform, as I have experienced with the likes of Subaru XV and Impreza and with Subaru’s integral symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, the new Forester as with that of its predecessors remains a true real-world family SUV.
Powered by only a single engine option, the Forester utilises Subaru’s award-winning 2.0-litre petrol-driven boxer motor. All powered is sent through a continually variable transmission (CVT), which I might add is one of the best CVT’s which I have experienced.
While you can feel its weight on take-off when on route the Forester puts its power down well and makes for a great drive no matter the surface. The 4×4 select X-Drive modes further makes light work of when the going gets tough. Fuel-consumption is acceptable for this size of vehicle with an average of 8.8-litres/100 km being achieved through my week-long journey.
Space, Safety & Comfort
The Forester has always been about practical family commuting. This latest model offers great space throughout the cabin. Large door opening and windows allow for space and light. A high roofline and boot measuring-in at 520-litres makes for true practicality.
Safety is at the forefront with any modern Subaru and the Forester further follows the mould. Now offering Eyesight Technology (uses two-eyes to monitor road conditions), radar-guided cruise control and every imaginable safety system, the Forester offers true piece of mind for the entire family. A few other safety features include lane departure warning, automatic braking (front collision avoidance), rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.
On a technological front, the cabin has several USB and power sockets and features Subaru’s simple, yet very intuitive Starlink Multimedia system. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, Navigation and steering-wheel-mounted controls are just some of the features on offer. The secondary display also offers full-control of vehicle-related information.
