To many motorists, the name Subaru and especially the model Impreza relate only to images of gold wheels, a massive wing over the boot lid and bright blue paintwork. While this is true for the Subaru Impreza WRX, Subaru also offers an Impreza for the whole family, with reliability and safety you can count on and performance to get excited about, the Impreza is the foundation for your active life.
Riding on Subaru’s all-new Global Platform, the Impreza maintains the brand’s strong rally based heritage. Even though this is designed as a family vehicle, the new Impreza has a dynamic chassis which is tight and composed and makes handling an absolute treat. The Impreza not only corners incredibly well, it also absorbs uneven surfaces and remains planted throughout the drive.
Power is offered up in terms of Subaru’s horizontally mounted boxer motor. With direct injection, the powerplant is 12 kg lighter than its predecessor, while the gearbox is almost 8 kg lighter as well. The decrease in weight with peak outputs of 115 kW and 196 Nm going to all four wheels through Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT, means that the Impreza offers more than enough shove on the road, while remain light and fuel efficient enough with claimed fuel economy figures of just 7.2L/100km combined average.
Though some people argue against CVT’s the one fitted to the new Impreza is very impressive with an overall smooth surge of power being delivered where and when it is required.
For those of you who have had a chance to experience Subaru’s latest generation multimedia interface, you’ll know just how intuitive, easy to use and impressive it really is. A large colour touchscreen at the centre of the dash allows for ease of navigation, thanks to large graphical icons and quick launch into the likes of navigation, media sources of a multitude of sources and even 4 x USB slots in the cabin.
Bluetooth with steering-wheel-mounted controls and the ability to use services such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto further lead to the diverse range of uses and wealth of technology powering the multimedia system.
The 6.3″ Multifunction secondary display situated above the multimedia system provides a clear view of additional vehicle information and media sources and works seamlessly well. The secondary display is also a great way in which to operate Subaru’s groundbreaking Eyesight technology.
With the Eyesight system, the vehicle observes road conditions and using three “eyes” situated at the top of the windscreen makes provision for any possible obstacles, such as people crossing roads, other vehicles and even cyclists. It is an excellent system and even allows for radar-guided cruise control, adding piece of mind to any journey.
Impressive ground clearance, Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system and a 460-litre boot carrying capacity even with the seats folded-up, not to mention enough space to carry a far greater load with the seats folded in their 60:40 split, helps make the Subaru Impreza a true all-rounder.
