Team MTN Qhubeka, powered by Samsung Electronics South Africa, have come a long way as the first African team to compete in the Tour de France. The team has made South Africa proud with amazing achievements. Daniel Teklahaimonot became the first African to wear the King of the Mountain polkadot jersey for two consecutive stages, Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg placed an impressive 8th in stage 7 and the crowning glory so far was Steven Cummings’ 1st place in stage 14. Samsung is rallying behind Team MTN Qhubeka as they continue to push for the top spot in this prestigious race ending on the 26th of July.

“Like Team MTN Qhubeka, Samsung started from humble beginnings and as such we recognise the hard work and effort the team has put in to get this far,” says Craige Fleischer, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa. “One of our key values is to empower South Africans with our relentless innovation and strategic partnerships. By powering Team MTN Qhubeka, we are turning dreams into reality not only for the team, but also for local communities.”

Samsung’s support of the team extends beyond financial backing, the team have been kitted out with the most advanced Samsung technology. The partnership has also provided the opportunity to give back to the community through the #BicyclesChangeLives initiative. The campaign is a bicycle donation scheme that supplies scholars across Africa with bicycles to overcome the challenge of getting to school. In South Africa alone, over half a million students walk more than two hours to school and back, every day. Distance is a huge barrier to education and bicycles provide a solution to overcome this problem in making it a little easier and quicker to get to school.

Together with MTN, Samsung have donated 2 608 bicycles to learners in Africa, contributing towards Team MTN Qhubeka’s commitment to provide a total of 5 000 bicycles during 2015. The public and other corporates can also donate, as every single bicycle will help change the life of a child, the most precious gift that anyone can give.

Apart from products and financial support Samsung has also donated a percentage of Galaxy smartphone and tablet sales to fuel the Qhubeka, World Bicycle Relief Programme in South Africa with the focus on uplifting communities through innovative technology.

“We are proud to support the team during every stage of the most esteemed international cycle race,” continues Fleischer. “Samsung is uniting with fellow South Africans to wish Team MTN Qhubeka the best of luck during their tour as they proudly fly the flag for Africa.”
