Vivo, you may not yet have heard of them. Here in SA, we are used to a few big names in the mobile market always springing to mind. That is until now, we were invited to meet Vivo, a part of the massive BBK Electronics group responsible for names such as Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus and Realme.

We were invited to watch history unfold, as the world’s 5th largest smartphone maker emerges within the South African market.

What is VIVO

Vivo is a mobile phone maker that focusses on producing first-tier mobile devices. Devices which pack performance grade internals, impressive design and an affordable price point. Over the next twelve months, we will see many of their models arrive in Mzansi.

It’s a brand within pole position in both China and India and already from this coming weekend (07 December 2019) will be available via contract and prepaid options. Initially, the two launch model devices will be offered through Vodacom and pricing starts from below R2000. This being said, let’s give you a brief look at the two devices.

The Y11 will cost you R2699 (prepaid). It packages a sleek dark blue body comprised of a premium build with features including:

  • 5000 mAh Battery
  • 6.35″ 1544 x 720 HD+ Display
  • Rear AI DUAL 13MP+2MP Camera & Front 8MP Camera
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB ROM (Plus Additional Micro SD Card Slot)

This is the entry model being introduced and is priced at R1899 (prepaid). Comprising of a Halo Screen, large battery and cool two-tone rear cover, this device features:

  • 4030 mAh Battery
  • 6.22″ HD+ 19.9 Display
  • Rear 13MP & Front 5MP Camera
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB ROM (Plus Additional Micro SD Card Slot)

Both devices look great from first impressions and I will be bringing you an unboxing and full video experience soon. During the media event, I also got a chance to take a quick sneaky look at the brand’s Nex 3 5G. With Vivo being leaders in the world’s 5G space, the Nex 3, represents a flagship and vision for what we can expect to see emerging even in SA from Vivo.

In Conclusion

To say that I am excited to see a brand like Vivo come to South Africa is an understatement. I love technology, I love innovation, and to see a brand emerge which brings both, and leads rather than just follows is very exciting #WatchThisSpace.
