Engen Volkswagen Cup competition at Zwartkops Raceway on Tuesday, August 9, will be a touch more colourful with the national championship competitors celebrating Women’s Day. The entire field of Volkswagen Polo TSI race cars will, instead of the usual Engen stickers with blue backing, sport pink Engen windscreen banners instead.

“The Engen Volkswagen Cup series is fast approaching two decades of national competition in South Africa,” says Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “In that time we’ve had several women competing in the series – like Robyn Kruger and Tasmin Pepper, the chairperson for the championship is Desiree Jacoby and the commentator is Lerryn Mew.”

33 - Chris Shorter

“This doesn’t include the women involved with our championship, the mothers, sisters, girlfriends and wives who play a host of roles that make each race day possible.”

In recognition of and respect for the women involved in motorsport, the pink banners across the windscreen are a thank you from the Engen Volkswagen Cup series for everything they to do ensure racing takes place.

When it comes to the championship standings ahead of round five for the 2016 season, it is Keagan Masters (18 – Champion) who still leads the pack. Despite a tough outing in East London where he didn’t even feature in the podium results, Masters retains a narrow buffer to his rivals – and his performance at Zwartkops Raceway during the season opener should see him optimistic about keeping that lead.

Christopher Shorter (33 – Payen/Hollard/Turn10) and Shaun La Reserveé (M3 – Alpine Motors / Compendium Insurance) are the two competitors who pose the biggest threat to Masters, each with a realistic chance of reeling in the championship leader in the short term.

Engen Volkswagen Cup, M3 - Shaun La Reservee-2

For La Reserveé the challenge of rising from third to aim for the lead is also at the mercy of the actions of Trevor Bland (M2 – Universal Health Care/Phoenix). Bland is fourth overall in the championship and holds third in the Masters category. This means he is capable of making life very difficult for La Reserveé in his search for greater success overall – while not risking his lead in the Masters – where he also has to worry about Juan Gerber (M8 – Glasfit/Ctrack/XCT) who holds second spot in this category.

19 - Kuda Vazhure, Engen Volkswagen Cup, Extreme Festival, Killarney Raceway-3

This will keep the action exciting at Zwartkops Raceway on Tuesday, which will also see the return of Kuda Vazhure (19 – Volkswagen Motorsport) who had a big accident during the early stages of the East London weekend. He returns to competition for round five with a new Volkswagen Polo TSI and a determination to turn his bad luck around.
